Northern Trust could run into Tuesday to ensure 72 holes played after delay from Tropical Storm Henri
Henri tore through the Northeast of the United States over the weekend, leaving thousands without power and causing flooding.
Severe weather affected the Northern Trust tournament held at Liberty National Golf Club, Jersey City, New Jersey.
The final round of the inaugural FedExCup playoff event – the pinnacle of the PGA Tour season – has been postponed from Sunday to Monday due to heavy rain forecasts.
According to the tournament’s website, the golf course received more than 6 inches of rain from Saturday night through Sunday afternoon.
According to a statement from the PGA Tour, conditions were made to allow the entire 72 holes played at the Northern Trust to have a winner.
“Thus, for the Northern Trust, BMW Championship and Tour Championship, play will be allowed to go beyond Monday if it is deemed necessary to complete 72 holes of play, regardless of the number of plays completed on Monday. . This adjustment is consistent with the Tournament Rules already in effect for the Players Championship.”
Northern Trust is the first of three FedExCup Playoff events. The BMW Championship will kick off on Thursday, August 26 with the season finale, the Tour Championship, scheduled to begin on Thursday, September 2.
The weather already means fans won’t be able to attend the final game of the day.
The PGA Tour says its plan is to play the tournament on Monday.
Cameron Smith of Australia and Jon Rahm of Spain topped the leaderboard with just 18 holes left. Smith scored an 11-course record under par 60 on Saturday to boost the rankings.
