HADLEY, MA (WGGB/WSHM) Scary moments for late Sunday night shoppers at Walmart in Hadley. At around 10:00 a.m., police received multiple 911 calls reporting gunshots in the store. A male and female suspect was arrested in connection with the shooting and was taken to court on Monday. Meanwhile, two men are in critical but not life-threatening condition at the hospital.

Western Mass News obtained court documents about what opened up.

An investigation is underway in Hadley following a shooting Sunday night. According to police, dispatch received several calls about shots that could have been fired inside the town’s Walmart as soon as 10 p.m.

Western Mass News spoke to both Hadley and visiting residents who were concerned about what had happened in town.

“Normally that doesn’t happen in Hampshire,” said Nikolas Fowler of Northampton.

Fowler was crossing the parking lot of the Mountain Farms Shopping Center at Dunkin Donuts on Sunday night when shots were fired inside the Hadley Walmart.

“It was horrifying, that doesn’t usually happen in Hadley so we were all very scared,” Fowler said.

Multiple police teams responded to the area on 9th Street after receiving multiple calls of gunshots in the store. Western Mass News was on the scene Sunday night.

“It happened in the bathroom at the Walmart in Hadley,” said Laurie Loisel, communications director for the Northwestern District Attorney’s office.

In court documents obtained by Western Mass News, officials said the alleged shooter got into a black Mercedes and fled the scene.

The same car was stopped by officers on Russell Street. That’s where both the driver and the passenger are detained.

The two faced a judge Monday in Eastern Hampshire District Court for their cases. The male defendant has been identified as Wilmer Alvarez-Vargas, 26 years old from Chicopee.

This is an evolving story.

“He pleaded not guilty to two counts of assault, with intent to kill,” Loisel said.

Alvarez-Vargas is being held at risk hearings scheduled for Tuesday, August 31.

The female defendant has been identified as Keyla Fernandez, 32, of Holyoke. She is facing multiple charges including accessory to a crime after the incident.

“Her case is continuing until September 20 for a pre-trial conference,” Loisel said.

Officials believe this was not a random shooting.

Meanwhile, police said two men returned to the scene, each with two gunshot wounds, and were taken to Baystate Medical Center. They have been identified as 19-year-old Jeraun Matos and 18-year-old Juan Hernandez.

Again, the district attorney’s office said the victims remained in serious but not life-threatening condition. They also let us know the case is still under investigation.
